A Blast from the Past, Talia's Blog My husband and I were browsing for a new laptop when we ran into an old friend, Eric. He and Danny embraced each other, their eyes big and excited because they hadn’t crossed each other’s path in over ten years. [more]

What's your secret?, Talia's Blog Last week, I spent three days, 26 hours, and 15 minutes in leadership training. On the first day, the trainer asked each of us to write an anonymous secret on a Post-it and stick it on the wall. Throughout each day (as an energizer), one of us was asked to pick a random Post-it off the wall, read it, and then select three of us who he or she believed could have written the secret. Once the three were chosen, the real person was asked to identify his or her self. [more]

The big game -- who've you got? Fun fact: the NFL takes its trademark rights very seriously. I'm not totally sure I'm allowed to refer to this weekend's important athletic competition by its name, unless I want to be hauled off in chains and sent to rot in an island prison alongside the first guy to say "Xerox" when he meant "photocopy." Instead, I have to call it "the big game," or the "championship," or "a bunch of hilarious commercials constantly interrupted by a boring football game." As a New England Patriots fan, I'm finding it hard to choose a rooting interest in this one. There are arguments for and against each team. [more]

(Mental) spring cleaning, Professor Mom It's the end of the week, and I can safely say that through all the rushing back and forth, the meetings, the staying up late to work, and the pressing deadlines, I did apparently squeeze in time to clear out that mental closet of mine. In fact, I cleared it out so much that I have bags of stuff at the curb, waiting for trash pickup on Tuesday. [more]

First birthday cake and other sugary stuff My twins recently celebrated their first birthday, which of course meant cake and icing for the first time. I initially planned on making a "healthy" cake, something with flavors already familiar to them, like a pumpkin or banana cake. But my husband insisted on real cake for their first birthday. [more]

Next Stop: Pickyville, Jessica Last week I mentioned my "Oh Wow!" strategy to help encourage healthy eating when R and G are slow to eat their vegetables. It works a lot of the time, but I think I may need to have a few more tricks up my sleeve. [more]

Has Technology Become Human Behavior?, Talia's Blog The things that are necessity. It is incredible how the times have changed. We went from kerosene lamps, to gas lighting, to “clapping” lights on and off, to doing the same by simply walking into a room.

What's in YOUR closet?, Professor Mom Yesterday was a little crazy, all of it--the whole day. At the end of it I couldn't find much I wanted to write about because most of what I would have written about seemed whiny and self-pitying, or included rants about health insurance claims, playground injustices, the weather, and kids who spill hot chocolate on your favorite green pants. Sometimes all these petty and not-so-petty things add up inside your head, like an overflowing storage bin, and you just want to break out the rubber gloves and a gigantic vacuum and do some major housecleaning before you truly lose your mind. Snow Day!, Jessica The weather forecasters had been calling for a big snow for days, but I always take forecasts with a grain of salt. More often than not, they fail to materialize. So when I woke up this morning and my alarm clock radio was in mid-sentence saying, "...the entire campus of Ohio State is closed..." I knew the forecasters were correct. OSU *never* closes, and as I expected, all the schools, including R and G's preschool, were shut down. In an effort to entertain the little ones, I have had to get creative. It started early this morning with... Snowman Pancakes [more]

My Daughter's Motivation, Talia's Blog I attended a funeral the other day. Two Spanish women and a white woman stood next to the bereaving daughter. As I approached, I realized they were my daughter’s principal, guidance counselor, and teacher. They welcomed me with high regard (this has been happening since my daughter was in kindergarten): “This is Porshai’s mother!” Porshai is a great student and a leader among her peers. “You’re doing an amazing job,” they said.
