I Recognized Your Voice, Talia's Blog

Imagine a mother and child. She sits on a bench at a busy playground, noisy with yelling, laughter, and crying. Her child plays--climbing the monkey bars, swinging wildly, sliding down the slide. Suddenly, another child screams. The mother instantaneously recognizes her child’s cry.

Research reports that, "Just as there is a part of your brain that recognizes another human face, there's a region that can tell human voices apart from other sounds."

My cell phone vibrated. I looked at the caller ID. It was AJ.

“What's up, man?” I said when I answered. [more]

Got Cauliflower?, Jessica

As I mentioned last month, one of my goals for our kitchen is to waste less food. The recipe below helps me use one of my perennial kitchen waste items, extra cauliflower.

Our family loves Cauliflower au Gratin, but usually we aren’t able to eat a whole head of cauliflower by ourselves, and it isn’t the sort of recipe you want to be eating for three days straight. [more]

My son, the blogger and President-to-be, Talia's Blog

When I came home from work, my son stood at the front door with a red notebook in his hand. "I am a blogger, Mommy,” he announced. “Do you want to read it?" I really just wanted to first get in the door, undress, and get relaxed, but….

“Let me see,” I said. He had a few entries. There was one about his bed, one about lunch, and the one I want to share. It is entitled, "My President." [more]

First Names and Crime: Can your name make you bad?

A study published in the latest issue of Social Science Quarterly (Volume 90 Issue 1) found a correlation between unpopular first names and crime. Researchers David Kalist and Daniel Lee cross-referenced a popularity name index against the names of kids in the juvenile justice system, and found that both white and black juveniles with unpopular names were more likely to be delinquents.

Spring on your Plate, Jessica

Last week we were venturing outdoors without a jacket, going on bike rides, and even digging for worms (which leads me to a question…do worms hibernate? There were *none* in our soil). Then midweek, a storm passed through and our approaching-70 weather returned to the typical Ohio-in-February chill. [more]

Sunday at the park, Professor Mom

This past Sunday we finally broke free from the house and took the kids on a family trip to the library (more Junie B. Jones books--help us!) and then to this store to replace the little jeweled box of chocolates we got for L. for Valentine's Day. The dog swiped the box off his side table a few hours after he got it, and only minutes after he'd arranged all the chocolates just so in the box. [more]

Independence, Professor Mom

I'm going to make a dramatic departure from my usual wordy (too wordy?) posts and give you these photos instead, not only because yesterday was a long day indeed, as most Mondays are, with too many things to think about and too much thrown into the mix, but also because I think the photos speak so perfectly for themselves. I'm sure they will strike a chord with parents of feisty, I-just-turned-FIVE-and-can-do-it-on-my-own-thank-you-very-much children everywhere: [more]

The ABCs of CSAs, Jessica

Our family is toying with joining a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) co-op. The New Century CSA is a local farm near Columbus that will deliver fresh produce each week of the growing season to our home. [more]

Therapy and Bed Bugs, Talia's Blog

I did an intake with a therapist the other day. She asked me all sorts of questions.

“Have you ever had therapy before?”

“Are you angry?”

“Yes,” I said. “I'm irritable.”

Then I asked, “Is irritable the same as being angry?”

“How are your eating habits?”

“Do you abuse any form of substance?”

“No,” I answered.

Then I asked, "Do Tylenol PMs fit into the substance category?"

“Why do you want to meet with a therapist?” [more]

A family’s food for a week

Have you ever thought about how much food your family consumes in a week? How about how much money you spend on that week’s worth of food? I recently came across this photo essay from Time on what families around the world eat. The families are photographed with their weekly consumption of food neatly arranged around them. [more]
