Lying low, Professor Mom

We had all kinds of busy and exciting things planned for the weekend: there was the vegetarian potluck on Saturday, and pumpkin carving, and an outing with friends, and we'd talked about a hike in the woods on Sunday, to celebrate the return of crisp, fall weather. But on Saturday morning, in the wee hours of the morning, T. woke me up by crawling into bed next to me and uttering the ominous words, "I don't feel very good." Then she settled her hot little body around mine and I lay awake, feeling an almost audible toll of some warning bell somewhere: fever, oh no! [more]

That's a wrap, Jessica

A new week is upon us and with it comes new busyness and excitement. R and G both have Halloween/Harvest parties at school this week, Thursday brings Trick or Treating (still don't understand why we have it on the 29th this year) and SPH has a busy work week too.

Each weekend I try and come up with a menu plan for the week to help ease the stress of each night's meal. With an extra busy week, I tend to focus on easy-to-prepare favorites, some of which can be made ahead or in the slow cooker. [more]

Monday's Health Tip: Climb Those Stairs!

Good news for all you people who think you don't have time to exercise. In a recent study, British researchers confirmed that some exercise, even as little as a few minutes a day , is better than nothing.

So what's the easiest way to work up a sweat without investing too much of your precious time? It's as easy as climbing stairs. [more]

My fathers, Talia's Blog

"Frankie is your father," my grandmother said.

Looking through my mother’s photo albums I found a picture of me with this man, Frankie. I’m a toddler in the photo. Frankie wears a shabby brown leather jacket and a fisherman’s hat. He holds me in his arms. I’m wearing a brown coat with rainbow colors on the sleeves, and a fisherman’s hat like his. We’re both smiling. Frankie looks like a nice guy. [more]

"I’m gonna shoot Diamond in her ass.” , Talia's Blog

Diamond and Crystal were twin sisters. Big, built like men. Old as my mother. Intimidating, and they knew it. And they were crack heads.

They bullied people in the projects. They hustled them. They robbed them. And no one did anything about it because they were two BIG bitches. [more]

Feed the soul (again), Professor Mom

Something has happened to my internal clock, and to the internal clocks of my students, and my husband, and my poor children, who usually hop out of bed pretty wide awake every morning (my kids can go from asleep to awake in .2 seconds). Every day this week I've surfaced painfully from a deep sleep and every day this week I've had to drag both L. and T. out of bed. Even the dog has a hard time getting up. She follows me downstairs in the dark, but races to her second dog bed--the one in the office--to catch a little extra snooze time while I blow dry my hair. [more]
