The year in review, Professor Mom L.'s last day of third grade is today. I can scarcely believe it, really. Each year seems to drag on painfully slowly, over horrible bumps and snags in the road, dark twisty portions where you can't see the light ahead, sudden bursts of clear ground now and again. But then May hits and all of a sudden we're there, at the end of it, not knowing just how to feel. But we're at the end now--almost. [more]

A mother's guilt My 5-month-old daughter has come down with something. Her nose is gunky, her eyes watery, her little baby cough as heartbreaking as it is cute. It’s devastating. But the worst part? It’s all my fault. [more]

Winner Sides, Jessica Last weekend when we were visiting R and G's Grandma Sheri and Papa, Grandma Sheri whipped up this orzo dish. It seems that every time we visit, I come back with some new recipe to take home with me. Grandma Sheri always has a wonderful smorgasbord of foods when we come to visit, but I have come to especially anticipate her wonderful side dishes. [more]

Also on again and off again most of the afternoon I cooked for the potluck (sesame noodles, banana bread, pasta salad) and listened to many remarkable stories on NPR about soldiers from days long ago, and recent days, too. Our Stories, Talia's Blog Like letters which become sentences that grow into paragraphs, likewise our lives are written. Our table of contents properly sorts the chapters of our lives, and provides them with subtitles. We dedicate our stories to someone for some reason... my family, my children, my third grade teacher Ms. Johnson for believing in me. Every book begins in a different way... she was born, he died, they lived. Each chapter discloses who we are, why we are. She stood before us in a board room and passionately prodded us, saying, “We are advocates for kids.” [more]
