King of The Jungle!, Craftivity Corner I love this craft because it uses cut outs of your child's hands, and that makes it just a little more special. I don't keep many crafts we make but always find room to store these away. [more]

They want to tax my booze! The United States Senate is considering imposing a tax on beer, wine, and hard liquor. The Massachusetts State Senate is considering a similar proposal. As you might expect, this is making some people very upset. [more]

Books, books, books!, Professor Mom For the better part of last year I've been hoarding books. I don't tend to buy my books from a bookstore, unless a new book I am dying to read and/or just must get my hands on (like these guilty pleasures, for instance) comes out and then I have to head to the store pronto.

Naturally Sweet , Jessica Need a way to jazz up a ham and cheese or other type of lunch sandwich with a naturally sweet, healthful spread? Try making some homemade fig spread. Fig jam can be found in upscale grocery stores and is delicious. But for a quick sandwich fix, a fig spread is easy to make and tasty to eat. It’s sweetness pairs well with ham or proscuitto and a sharp cheese to make an irresistible sandwich combination. To make your fig spread, simply take some whole dried figs and cut into quarters: [more]

Blame it on the teething, yeah yeah Once my baby hit the ripe old age of three months, the mysterious and unpredictable malady of teething was all of a sudden a convenient yet viable diagnosis for any abnormal and/or unpleasant behavior. Excessive drooling, refusal to eat, runny nose, first-thing-in-the-morning fussiness, mid-day fussiness, evening fussiness, middle-of-the night fussiness … you get the idea. So for three months now, we’ve been using this handy, catch-all excuse to visitors or family members whenever she seems the slightest bit undesirable to hang out with. “Oh, she must be teething,” we’ll say as she whines and squirms in Grandpa’s arms. “Poor thing.” [more]

Fear factor, Professor Mom When I teach freshman composition--which I do all the time, actually, I try and make an effort to assign my students readings that will help them understand and question the world at large. For years I've been giving my students readings from different cultures--whether they are cultures abroad, or cultures within this country, the one we all claim as our own. I try and shake up their perspective, in order to teach them the critical thinking skills I think are most important for success in this world. [more]

Olive Bar Green Beans, Jessica R loves olives. I know I have mentioned it before, but it bears repeating because the kid eats olives like they are candy. When you find a healthful food like olives (sure, they can be high in sodium, so I do watch to make certain he doesn’t overdo it) that your child eats, why not use it to your advantage? This recipe uses olives as a topping for green beans. While R is pretty decent about eating plain green beans, this recipe is a nice jazzed up side dish that pleases adults and olive-eating kids too. Dinosaurs Are Taking Over!, Craftivity Corner I thought I would devote today to sharing some wonderful dinosaur projects around the blogosphere! Dinosaurs appeal to preschoolers' imaginations, but the theme is one you can take with you as they get older and dig in deeper to learn more. [more]

Monopoly, Talia's Blog My family plays Monopoly while I watch. I don’t play anymore. It reminds me too much of life. I’d be the boot; I’d walk in a circle for hours. I’d collect $200 every time I passed Go, but I’d just as quickly land on someone’s property and owe money--debt! Or I’d take a chance and end up in jail. Or I’d pay electricity, hospital and beauty bills, or rent and mortgage. Where is the fun in that? [more] |
