Watermelon Granita, Jessica

Watermelons are big. Yes, I am the master of the obvious.

Unless you are feeding a crowd, if you buy a watermelon, for let's say, the watermelon salsa I posted yesterday, you will probably have some leftover watermelon.

Need a super easy, almost effortless way to transform your extra watermelon into a yummy, frozen, fat free snack?

Take the extra watermelon and press it through a sieve to extract the watermelon "juice:" [more]

Covenant Sisters, Talia's Blog

She reminded me of a hippie from the sixties, arrived in the early 1990s. When I was wearing blue jean shorts with Timberland boots and no socks, she wore plaid bell bottom pants and platform shoes. How do opposites as obvious as us become alike? [more]

Thanks, George, Professor Mom

When we took L. out for his birthday dinner earlier this month the conversation turned, as it always does these days, to his latest obsession: Star Wars. He had just watched Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones (when did Star Wars get so complicated? It has taken me forever to get my mind around the fact that there are no longer just three movies) rented as a birthday treat, and his head was still spinning from the film. [more]

Recycled Catalog Doll House, Craftivity Corner

Photobucket

I love reusing things I get sent for free in the mail. Catalogs are a perfect material for lots of crafts so after I read through them lusting after the bedding and chandeliers I hide them away .

1. Gather your materials. You will need a paper grocery bag, some home catalogs , scissors, double stick tape and a few figurines. [more]

Buy a car...get a gun?!

On the market to buy a new car...and a new gun? You might want to head to Butler, Missouri. That's right folks- if you buy a new car from Max Motors, you're entitled to a $450 voucher from a local gun shop to purchase an AK-47 assault rifle. You know, because everyone should have an AK-47 assault rifle in their home. [more]

The bad, the ugly, and the good, Professor Mom

We've been back from vacation for two days now, and I realized on Saturday that the urge to share bad vacation stories is not unlike the need to share birth stories--particularly birth stories that involve squirm-in-your-seat gruesome details. Even though I had sworn nine years ago I wouldn't be one of those new mothers who went on and on in intimate detail about their labor and birth experience, only days after L.'s birth I found myself to be exactly that kind of woman. Watermelon Salsa, Jessica

Last week I shared a recipe that my Uncle Frank had made for our family reunion last month. Today I share an equally yummy recipe that I gleaned from my Aunt Di and cousin Jill.

You see, my cousin Jill is due with her first baby in late September. Like most mothers-to-be, she has had her share of food cravings and such. One of her big cravings? Watermelon.

Jill came up with this recipe to satisfy her watermelon craving in a really creative, fun and tasty way. My Aunt Di then replicated it for our family reunion, and well, it didn't take me long before I was making it too. [more]

The Funeral, Talia's Blog

The choir sang words that echoed those that my grandmother often shared, "My body got tired. I got to find a resting place. Every day is going to be Sunday, no more tears."

I viewed my grandmother’s body from the back of the church. The bind that held our family together was undone and laid to rest in a casket. What did that mean for my family? [more]

Emmy nominations announced

Yesterday, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 61st annual Emmy Awards. As usual, the Sopranos earned the most nominations, with nods for -- what's that? The Sopranos has been off the air for a couple years? Old habits die hard, I guess. In fact, there were some pleasant surprises on this year's list. [more]
