The pen is mightier..., Professor Mom People who know me would say that I am a very non-confrontational person, sometimes to a fault. I am a fixer-of-things, and a mediator. I prefer to look for the painless solutions, the ones you can reach with a minimal amount of emotional outpouring, or ugly exchanges, or hurt feelings. I also prefer to do battle on paper, and to outline my thoughts in writing before having a face-to-face discussion. [more]

Only the Best, Jessica Here we are in the second week of November and already the holidays seem imminent. My mom was in town over the weekend, affording SPH and I the luxury of doing some shopping—by ourselves. And good thing too, as every which way you turn there is some sort of item luring kids’ attention and seemingly begging, “put me on your Christmas list!” [more]

Monday’s Health Tip: Clean out Your Medicine Cabinet! Swine flu (H1N1 for you proper folks) is running amok. Knock on wood, I haven’t gotten sick, and none of my friends or family has been unfortunate enough to catch this icky virus. But, a few acquaintances, friends of friends, and friend’s family members have gotten it, and from what I’ve heard, it’s a real bear to deal with. Aside from the flu, this time of year is chock-full of other fabulous illnesses, including the regular flu and the common cold. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your medicine cabinet is fully stocked…with fresh medicine. [more]

A letter from my attorney, Talia's Blog May 19, 1995 Dear Talia, I was happy to receive your letter and hope that everything is going well for you. I’m sorry that it took a little while to write back to you, but my schedule has been as busy as ever. You seem to be adjusting OK and to be trying to make good use of your time at South Bay. [more]

Three things from the weekend, Professor Mom Did you have spectacular fall weather like we had this weekend? I spent most of it outdoors, making up for all the sick, couch-ridden days from the weekend before. We raked, finally put away the Halloween decorations (it’s so much easier and exciting to put them up, isn’t it, then to take them down?), and T. and I spent some quality time in the hammock, watching the leaves spiral down from the blue, blue sky. I felt some of my old energy coming back—not all of it yet, but enough to make me feel like myself again, and not some recovering invalid. [more]

Tissue Paper Indian Corn, Craftivity Corner
Thanksgiving is coming up fast and so often gets overshadowed by Halloween and Christmas. I love Thanksgiving because my son was born just as most of you were finishing up your pumpkin pie in 2006. So I love to make Thanksgiving crafts . 1. Gather your materials. You will need a piece of brown construction paper, some yellow, orange and red tissue paper, a marker, scissors and glue. [more]

Because we all needed another reason to fear swine flu To be honest, until recently I just wasn't concerned about swine flu. Sure, it targets the young and healthy, and I'm young and healthy, but how bad could it really be? I'm young and healthy! Even as more and more people started coming down with it -- even two of our own bloggers -- they all seemed to recover after a few days. Big whoop. That was before I found out about the Cytokine Storm. [more]
