True-ly Good, Jessica

A few weeks ago I shared some tips for keeping your kids hydrated during the summer. In our family, the boys are more than willing to down a juice box or sugar-y drink wherever, whenever. But getting regular ole' water in them can sometimes be a challenge.

One idea that we've used fairly successfully with our boys is the use of "fancy-ing up" their water. A slice of lemon, lime, orange or even cucumber can sometimes make water a little more novel, but we don't always have fresh slices at our fingertips. [more]

Ocean In A Bottle , Craftivity Corner

This simple activity is something that delights kids of all ages. Babies love watching the oil and water swirl and older children will delight in the slow but inevitable separation of the two.

1. Gather your materials. You will need a simple plastic bottle, water, vegetable oil, food coloring, sequins, and sparkles. [more]

Quicksand, Talia's Blog

We finally unpacked the boxes in the youth lounge at the church. We threw out old papers and abstinence brochures. I also came across some very old journals. One year, I had purchased notebooks for everyone, and we wrote letters to each other every week. I laughed and cried as I read through them, reminiscing. They wrote about music and sports, and about how difficult it is to be a Christian and a youth. [more]

John Hughes, 1950-2009

I can't ever recall a string of celebrity deaths quite like this one. Yesterday, the celebrated writer and director John Hughes died suddenly of a heart attack at age 59. [more]

Ready...set...bento!, Professor Mom

I came home from an outing with T. on Wednesday to discover our bento boxes had arrived! I'd spent the week before convincing Scott that bento boxes were going to change our lives--or, at least, help us help L. change his school lunch habits (which mainly include sitting in his seat at the cafeteria and leaving his lunchbox unopened on the table in front of him).

T. was very excited to get her box. It's pink, of course. [more]

Birds Of A Feather, Read Together!, Craftivity Corner

We just returned from a short beach vacation and my 2 year old surprised me with what struck his fancy while away. It wasn't the water or the sand that he has been talking about , instead it was all about the different birds we saw and didn't see. So in honor of that here are a few great books about birds!

Fresh Vietnamese Chopped Salad, Jessica

I love recipes like this one. It is fresh and tasty, healthful, but best of all, is easily adaptable to whatever vegetables you have on hand in your kitchen.

This recipe uses an authentic Vietnamese ingredient, fish sauce. It is pungent, but beautifully flavorful when used in small amounts. It tranforms any recipe into an instant authentic Asian recipe when used.

For an easy dinner, take this chopped salad and top it with a grilled protein or tofu. Yum.

Mind over matter, Professor Mom

Ever since L. started kindergarten it's been our quest to get him to reveal some tidbit of information he learned at school. Every now and then he'll surprise us with an interesting fact ("did you know that a light second is 186,000 miles?") and we'll utter an exclamation of amazement and follow-up with our standard "did you learn that at school?"

But the answer is always, no. No, he learned it on such-and-such website, or in such-and-such book he read during math class when he was supposed to be learning about long division. [more]

Rolling Pin Printing, Craftivity Corner

Photobucket

Rolling pins aren't often used for baking in our house, it's usually play-dough and art instead. This is a fun and really easy way to make fun shape prints using your plain old rolling pin.

1. Gather your materials. You will need a plate, some paper, a rolling pin , some self stick foam, a paper cutter ( or scissors) , paint and some aluminum foil. [more]

It's Greek to Me, Jessica

When we were dating, SPH would cook these amazing meals that opened my eyes to new foods almost every time he started creating in the kitchen. Even as I type this, he is in the kitchen whipping up a filling for some stuffed peppers and tomatoes we will feast on later. The man is a true chef. [more]
