It never ends…., Talia's Blog

My husband rested his arm across my body. His hand pushed gently toward my breasts. I raced to fold my arms over them before he got there first. [more]

The CSA is now MIA, Jessica How was your weekend? Despite a tough loss Saturday night for my beloved Buckeyes, we had a great weekend in Sweet Pea-ville. One of the “icing on top” aspects of the weekend was the gorgeous weather. If I could press pause on the weather cycle at September, and leave it there most of the year, I would be a happy camper.

Block Painting, Craftivity Corner

This fun and easy project is a great way to have fun with paint and shapes, and show your children how to think creatively to use things for purposes other than their intended one. Also, plastic blocks wash so easily! My son was reluctant to start because he didn't want to get his blocks dirty, but once he started I couldn't get him to stop.

1. Gather your materials. You will need some paper, some plates, paint and plastic blocks. [more]

Mother and Daughter, Talia's Blog

The alarm on my Blackberry buzzed.

Danny shoved me, "Get up."

"You get up," I answered.

"You don’t want to be late for the first day of school," he said. [more]

9/11 Growing up, I never understood why my parents talked about the JFK assassination the way they did. The slightest reference to it and suddenly they were both recounting every detail of their lives on the day it happened. Something happened to them when they reminisced about where they were when they heard the president had been shot, a physical change: a faraway look in the eye, an expression of bewilderment tinged with sorrow. It was as if they'd momentarily traveled back in time to November 22, 1963. They were little kids again, 8 and 9 years old, and the ground had shifted under their feet. It could never be put back to where it was before.

What's up with all the salads?, Jessica

I realized as I was prepping today's post that unintentionally I ended up doing all of my posts about salad recipes this week. Perhaps it is the waning summer days and the realization that all-too-soon we'll be cooking more soups and stews and less salads.

Next time you cook rice for a stir-fry or other dish, make extra and freeze it. Then you will have rice on hand for recipes, like this one below.

Beyond the rice, dressing and black beans, this recipes changes a little bit each time I make it. I have added corn, cucumber or omitted the celery.

Me sized , Professor Mom

This week was one of those weeks that both dragged on painfully slowly, yet also seemed to pass in a blur. I’m not sure I can account for much of what I did back at home this week—it’s all a jumble of homework, quickie meals assembled from odds and ends, paper-grading, house cleaning in fits and spurts (although the kids’ suitcases STILL haven’t been unpacked yet from Labor Day weekend) and lots of ogling of kitty faces on our county's animal shelter web site. Books About Feelings, Craftivity Corner

Days like today that bring back such horror, sadness and strong emotions are the perfect time to talk to our kids about how we are feeling, and to open a dialogue about their feelings. These books are a great place to start. [more]
