Man. It can be tough., Skadaddle There’s no doubt about the fact that motherhood is an incredibly taxing experience. The level of “taxation” depends greatly on the mother and her wiring for the job. And there are other factors, like whether or not she was/continues to be a career woman, whether or not she always wanted to be a mother, and whether or not she has a solid support system around her. (Yes, I KNOW I’m completely oversimplifying this and leaving out a host of other elements – especially those related to medical/hormone issues, etc.

I'm no uber-mom, Professor Mom No sooner had we walked in the door yesterday from picking L. up from school, than he and his sister disappeared into the downstairs bathroom. I didn't notice at first. I was tired and hungry, and I came home to find that the plumber, who had arrived in the morning while Scott was home with T., had left dirty boot prints all over the kitchen floor, the entryway, and the upstairs bathroom. Don't hate me, Skadaddle As I was sitting outside and eating my lunch at the local mall yesterday, I overheard a conversation between a mom and her early-teen (I would guess) daughter. Well, I’m not sure it was a conversation, as much as it was an encounter. Okay, conflict. Yes, I overheard a conflict between the mom and her kid. [more]

Dreams and taxes, Professor Mom This past Saturday, my husband holed himself up in our home office to tackle the big April monster: the taxes. In the past we've usually succumbed to 11th hour pressure and taken the taxes to be done by someone else. But this year, with the kids getting bigger, and money tighter than usual, Scott decided he would do them himself. [more]

No joke: April Fool's Day, Skadaddle I remember loving April Fool’s Day as a kid. I couldn’t wait to play some joke on my mom, dad, brother, friends, or the dog. (Hey, I was young. I didn’t know she didn’t understand.) Whether it was feigning being sick, or telling my parents that some strange thing happened at school (“…and then they had to evacuate us and the Army came and then the FBI and then the fire department and then Mrs. Brown was taken away in a limousine…”), I loved the idea of April Fool’s Day. Loving and letting go , Professor Mom I've always considered myself a dog person--all my life. Growing up, we had the most amazing, human-like dog in the world, and she lived to the ripe old age of 16. Our current dog is sweet and wonderful in so many ways, but she's a very doggie dog and can't come close to matching the intelligence and human-like character of our old family dog. But that's okay, really, because with how crazy and chaotic daily life is around here, it's somewhat refreshing to come home to just a regular old smelly, doggie-sort-of-dog. [more]

Baseball statistics and parenting, Skadaddle The 2008 baseball season has barely started and I’m already reminded of what drives me absolutely nuts about America's pastime: The endless stats. And baseball, more than any other sport – is married to its statistics.

Party magic, Professor Mom On Friday I wrote about how amazing it was going to be to have a weekend with the carry-over of the glorious 80-degree weather we'd had that day. In reality, though, the temperatures plummeted some 40 degrees and both Saturday AND Sunday were cold and rainy and blustery. We even lit a fire on Sunday--long after we'd thought we wouldn't be doing that again for months and months to come. But Scott brought in armloads of wood and the kids gathered around, jumping up and down as they watched the flames leaping up into the chimney. [more]

Check another “first” off the list, Skadaddle There are any number of “first” experiences that bring parents together. Whether it’s the first word, first steps, or first time the kid sleeps through the night, we all have our own collection of “first” that we often share. (K-Man’s first word was “Harley,” which sounded more like “Ollie,” but still thrilled me to no end.) There are also any number of experiences that parents of older kids have, but other parents haven’t “yet” had the pleasure. [more]

All of this adds up to make this good Friday Feeling even better--what better way to head into the weekend than to have the promise of the continuation of some truly good weather? [more] |
