Rats!

I walked through the Boston Common, snuggled in a scarf that covered my face from the brisk Boston wind, on my way to fulfill my civic duty - jury duty. I am reminded that the city of Boston is beautiful, especially Beacon Hill. Beacon Hill was once called “Nigga Hill.” Between the Civil War and the turn of the century, Boston was one of the top migrant destinations in the urban north. Today, beautiful Beacon Hill is a neighborhood of federal-style row houses, known for its narrow, gas-lit streets and brick sidewalks. It is one of the most desirable and expensive neighborhoods in the country. But one thing they always forget to mention is that Beacon Hill is a rat burrow. I am petrified of mice, rats, and anything that looks like them. I wonder why God created such ugly, filthy, rodents. My husband says, “Rodents consume about 20% of the world’s total food supply." Remember that unforgettable scene in Superman (the one with Christopher Reeves), where Superman races to save Lois Lane who’s just lost her grip and is falling, and he catches her in midair? Remember that famous line, “I’ve got you, miss”? Then Lois screams, “You’ve got me! But who’s got you?” That is how I feel about rats – if they are consumers, then who’s consuming them?
