Sweet FlavorsHappy October All! Hard to believe we are into the holiday countdown. I was in Target last week with my older son and they had Christmas, yes Christmas things in the aisles. But with October starts the Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas-R and G Birthdays-Valentine’s Day-Easter Septfecta of holidays and celebrations. R has caught on to this and once October hits he gets very excited. So with all the candy that is about to invade our homes, how about a different kind of sweet to offer your little ones? I know it is hard to compete with chocolate and candy, but sometimes adding a different flavor profile to a well-known food can be intriguing to kids. Here is an easy way to expose your family to the simple, yet tasty ways to play with flavors: you can do several different iterations, but last week I simply mixed a bunch of fresh cut pineapple slices with lime juice and a small amount of chili powder. Now before you recoil or automatically think, “my child will never like that!” you may just want to give it a try. The chili powder is mild, but if you think it would be too much for your family, then just try the lime, or even lemon. The point here is that sometimes children are open to more tastes than we would imagine. Pineapple is so very sweet, that the mere act of a bit lemon or lime to it creates almost a lemonade-type taste experience. A bit of chili powder added to the lime gives a third flavor profile, and a new experience again. SPC

LOL!!! Love the Septfecta... ours is very similar to yours... one holiday/birthday after another!!! I thought of you tonight as I served this Mexican potroast with yellow squash, sweet potatoes and hominy because it looked like a fall meal and you seem to be good about posting food to go with the season. I knew Brian would love it but I wasn't so sure about the boys. I was surprised to see Landon pick up the squash whole and take several bites of that and the hominy. I wouldn't have touched either as a kid!!!
Ooohh, Mexican Pot Roast? Do share! Hope you all are doing well... Good to hear from you!
