A Happy Belated Mothers' Day to all you moms out there. Hope it was a good one...
One of my favorite, perhaps unconventional kitchen tools is a squirt bottle. You know, the ones that are clear, and are reminiscent of the old fashioned ketchup and mustard bottles? Easy to find at kitchen supply stores and even big box discount stores on occasion, a squirt bottle is a fun kitchen addition.
We use our squirt bottle when we want to fancy-up a dish, placing a sauce in it and making a design with it on a dish. For instance, drizzling sour cream chipotle sauce on top of tacos, or a raspberry sauce on top of a dessert. This simple tool can make a dish look super special.
But perhaps the most fun thing we do with our humble squirt bottle is to make personalized pancakes. Want to try? Here’s a quick primer:
1. Take your squirt bottle and fill it with a bit of pancake batter.
2. In a preheated skillet, use your squirt bottle to create a simple design, one that is of small enough size so that when you pour the remaining batter on top, it will fully cover the design. (Note that if you care to do letters, remember to write them backwards, so when you flip the pancake, it will look proper).
3. Let the design cook for 20-30 seconds, in order to allow the design edges to set a bit, so that when you add the additional batter, the design does not simply incorporate into the larger batter pour.
4. Once bubbles form over the entire surface of the pancake, flip and cook for a minute or two on the other side.
The result? A fun twist on pancake making, and a neat way to learn letters too!
