So we’re back. Our trip to Houston was a whole lot of fun, a little bit of relaxing and as an added bonus, included a touch of the stomach flu. Yes, the stomach flu. Let’s just say that when you are traveling and your two-year old gets the stomach flu, you thank God you are staying with good friends, friends who are empathetic, helpful and above all, have a good and hard-working washing machine. G was then kind enough to share his stomach bug with his mommy, who was none-too-happy to receive it, but weathered the storm and actually managed to fly home yesterday. So far R and daddy have been spared, and I am praying it stays this way. But stomach bugs aside, the trip was great. Our friends Brian and Jenn, with whom we stayed, are also bona fide foodies, so they made sure we had a great tasting tour of Houston and even treated us to a Crawfish Boil. I picked up a few recipes and lots of great food experiences which I will of course share. Here’s a first taste: The first food surprise of our trip was actually before we even landed in Houston when our flight attendants announced, “we’ll be coming through the cabin with dinner momentarily.” SPH actually responded to me, “that is cruel for them to announce that they are serving food in the First Class section to all of us.” I agreed. Imagine our surprise when the food started being served! A real dinner! For free! On a coach flight! God love Continental Airlines, they not only gave us a sandwich (“ham or turkey, your choice!” said the very friendly flight attendant), but Fritos and M&Ms. R was in heaven. Between the chips, M&Ms and the Cloud Mix we had made before we left, he couldn’t believe all the great food he was able to eat. The food on the flight was the first step into what I deem “vacation eating,” a zone in which mom and dad allow R and G a little more leniency (read: less vegetables, more treats) in their eating. But now we’re home and I am trying to regroup. Predictably, R and G turned up their noses when I offered them a healthy and vegetable-rich meal last night. So for now I am off to the grocery store to restock our fridge and get back into the swing of everyday life. But I’ll be back tomorrow with the first of some great Southwestern food. SPC
