Yesterday was R's big "Eat Lunch at School Day," the day I blogged about earlier this week. If you want the background, click here. As I dropped R off to school yesterday, I controlled myself from saying what I wanted to say, "Remember to make healthy food choices!" and simply said, "Have fun eating lunch at school today R! It should be fun!!" Driving away, I reminded myself that R has had plenty of unhealthy food and if he had a not-so-hot lunch just this once, it wouldn't hurt. But in my heart of hearts I really, really hoped that this first school lunch experience would be positive, and that he would feel good about making a healthy food choice. And yet, not knowing what his "choices" would be, I didn't know what to expect. So at dinner last night, SPH asked R, "Hey, how was eating lunch at school today?!" R replied, "It was fun dad!" "How did it work...did you eat in the cafeteria?" "Yes! And dad, I got to be the line leader to go through the cafeteria line." Long story short, R explained in detail how he walked through the line and was given (no choice) a slice of cheese pizza, salad and an orange. And then, the one point of the whole experience that made me glow with pride: "And for drink I chose white milk." My boy skipped the chocolate milk and drank plain milk, a big decision for a boy who loves chocolate! Woo hoo! So, all in all, eating lunch was a good experience for R. We'll still do packed lunches next year, but I am so glad he had this opportunity. SPC
