Food on a stick

With the warmer weather comes fair, festival and carnival season, and with it, a whole array of carnival foods. I am not sure what happens when one attends a festival, but suddenly things that we would not otherwise eat suddenly become staple foods. Elephant ears, funnel cakes, corn dogs, and the like grace most outdoor celebrations. After going to two local festivals in the last month, I came to the realization the other day that eating food on sticks is fun, especially for kids. Cotton candy, popsicles, lollipops, candy apples, corn dogs, and the like are all “stick” foods frequently found at carnivals. But even at home, when we have chicken satay or kebabs of some sort, there is a certain je ne sais quoi that makes eating food off of sticks, well, cool. Why not use this stick trick to your advantage? Last Saturday when the boys were ready for dinner but dad was still grilling up the burgers, I whipped up some fruit kebabs (pointed ends of the skewers cut off, mind you, since *anything* pointy becomes a sword or light sabre these days). The novelty of eating their fruit off of a stick kept them occupied a whole lot longer than just a bowl of fruit, and by the time they were done, dinner was served. SPC
