Summer Reads

Summer will officially be here in just a few days. Now is a great time to talk to your children about changing seasons and make a to do list of summer time things you don't want to miss. These books will help you get ready and excited for the season ahead. Photobucket "The Reasons For Seasons" by Gail Gibbons is a great non fiction summer time book. Really it's an any time book, it explains all four seasons and why we have them in the first place. The fantastic thing about this book is that you can break it down to easy snippets with great illustrations for toddlers or read all the informative text for older kids. This book will be useful for many many seasons in your house or class room. Photobucket "Summer Is Summer by Phillis and David Gershator and illustrated by Sophie Blackall is one of those books that parents may like even more than their kids. It's a nostalgic book and it's illustrations simply capture the hazy memories of summer that I have from my own childhood. The text is very simple , rhyming and repetitive. It centers around listing all the things summer is ; Watermelon, beaches, fireflies, ice cream, baseball. There is something for everyone and my son loved repeating the line "Summer is summer is summer!" dramatically as we read it. Photobucket "It's Summer!" by Linda Glaser is another celebration of the season worth picking up. This book celebrates the natural wonders summertime brings with it. Hot and sticky weather, gardening, and thunderstorms among other things like bug bites! What really steals the show are Susan Swan's cut paper illustrations. They are layered, 3 dimensional and make the whole book look like a walk through a lush garden.
