Scary, Scary Halloween by Eve Bunting was a little scary. I randomly grabbed all the Halloween books at my library earlier this week and although this book didn't seem that special from the cover, inside it's a great read. Readers get to see Halloween from the perspective of a family of cats under the porch . They see all sorts of scary creatures. If you look closely though there are clues that these are just people in costumes. My son was a little scared of the detailed pictures but it was the perfect way to open a dialogue about how he may see some scary costumes on Halloween, but that's all they are , just costumes.
Where is Baby's Pumpkin? by Karen Katz is a bright, happy and not scary at all Halloween book. I bought this book last year for my son thinking even at 2 he may have been a little old for this simple lift the flap book. I was wrong, a year later he is still picking it out to read. Not only does this book offer a chance for little hands to lift and find , it's also got different textures, like a velvety cat costume, bumpy ghost and smooth bat wings.
One Hungry Monster by Susan Heyboer O’Keefe isn't exactly a Halloween book but around here monsters fall into this genre by default. The reader counts from one to ten hungry monsters in this funny rhyming book where monsters take over a little boys house devouring food and other things. Great choice for Halloween or any time of the year.
