Giving Back: teaching young kids how.

It's amazing how the world has come together to help the devastation in Haiti. My son is 3 and I have purposefully not been watching news around him because he is very sensitive and I don't want him to be scared. I do want to remember how fortunate we are and just because I am not explaining this specific event to him , I can use it as a reminder to teach him how to give to those in need. Here are some ways you can incorporate teaching about service and charity for your preschooler : 1.Donate toys and books to a local women's shelter. Women's shelters are usually also shelter's for the women's children and many have left their homes in a hurry leaving behind toys and books. Choosing a toy that isn't simply something they don't like anymore but something once very loved can teach about sacrifice. Let your child choose the toy though, forcing isn't teaching anything. 2. Food banks always need food, when you go to the grocery store have your child pick something extra out to give to the food bank. A friend does this every time she shops with her daughter and I thought it was so great I have started too. 3. Take your finished crafts and drawings to a local old folks home or an elderly neighbor. 4. Participate in fund raising efforts like telethons, charity walks and coin campaigns. Explain why you are doing it and what the money will do. 5. Most importantly lead by example, serve yourself. When my husband worked on a Habitat for Humanity build it left a lasting impression on my son. Like all aspects of teaching and parenting what we do is far more important than what we tell them to do. How do you teach your child to give to those in need?
