When children are young family plays such a central part of their social life, and reading about all the special people they care about is a great way to talk about and strengthen those bonds.
Angelina's Baby Sister by Katherine Holabird is realistic story about a big sister getting very excited about a baby coming , then once it is born realizing that it's not as wonderful as she dreamed it would be. Angelina is not used to attention being given to others and has a terrible tantrum when she is angry and feels ignored. A great book for kids expecting a new baby, and really any child who is dealing with big changes.
My Brother Bert by Ted Hughes is a cute story about a little girl who is strictly forbidden from her big brother's room and the things she imagines, then finds in there when she goes in anyway! I remember not being allowed in my older siblings room, and going in anyway, and getting in trouble. The little sister doesn't get in trouble but this book could still be a great opportunity to talk about respecting other's things and privacy.
Here Comes Grandma! by Janet Lordis awesome. I love this book. It's all the different ways and lengths that a Grandma would go to see her grandson. She swims, she drives , even flies in a hot air balloon! My favorite is when she is riding atop a box car on a train, she's a real adventuresome old gal! Cute book about a grandma's love that would appeal especially to kids into transportaion like my son.
When Papa Snores by Melinda Long is a sweet book about a little girl and her grandparents who snore so loudly that the house shakes. What I thought was really sweet was that instead of complaining the little girl described the snoring as comforting and secure. It's a cute book that I know many of us can relate to!
