I like this contrast of static and organic. It really does get at the core of an enduring relationship. You can't go through more than a decade without weathering many changes, both within the relationship and external to it. I think that here are some defining personal characteristics that can influence how easy it is to stay the course with the other person (in my relationship, it's our sense of humor), but even those are not entirely static.

Congratulations on 12 years!

I think this idea of a relationship being organic is something you realize as you get older, really. I tried to think back to when I was 20, and I'm sure I saw it all as pretty static, too.

A sense of humor has kept us going through many a dark time, too!

Congratulations on your anniversary! My family has a similar birthday-anniversary connection. My grandmother gave birth to my uncle on my grandparents fifth wedding anniversary. I love seeing happy old couples, too. It is so sweet.

I really do think seeing happy elderly couples is one of the biggest, most heart-warming testimonies to love you can find...it never fails to affect me.
