Home again, home again

I don't have much in the way of a post for today. We left Canada at 9:30 in the morning yesterday and drove until 11:00 pm at night and when we finally tumbled out of the van in our driveway I think we were all in a state of trip-induced confusion and exhaustion. If the drive from Raleigh to Rochester was long, the drive from Canada to Raleigh was even LONGER. And the Blue Ride Parkway is not something you want to hit during the darkest, tiredest part of your trip, after ten hours on the road. One thing I'll say about embarking on such a long drive with your family: it won't necessarily feel long until about 9:00 at night, when you have a couple hours to go still. I do think, when we undertake something like that again, we'll probably break up the return trip into two driving chunks: one long one the first day, and then a shorter one (three or four hours) the next day. But we made it. And I have that post-trip glow inside--just like the one you get when you've accomplished something daunting, and grand, and fun and it all worked out. I also have another glow: the glow of pride in my kids who, after this trip, I can safely declare have earned the Best Travelers Ever award. They weathered the car trip like pros, and we didn't hear a single word of complaint out of either one of them the entire drive. I know this won't always be the case, on future trips we take, but the stars must have been aligned just right for this one. I'm off to begin the post-trip laundry-fest, and have coffee on my back porch. It's 9:15 and the kids are still asleep. Shhhhhh.... See you on the other side of the weekend!
