My favorite cousin - out of my dozens of cousins, the one most beloved by me - is in the Canadian military. He told my husband that he's lost 15 friends in the past year, and that all of his friends who have come back have returned either broken physically or ruined mentally.
And he's getting deployed.

It's unfortunate that you don't get to know how they are doing. Being forever the optimist, I believe that are doing okay, having served their deployments and moved on with their lives. I find military life such a mystery, such a foreign concept to me. I'm grateful to those who don't find it so frightening.

I'm sorry, beck--how sad and difficult.

I'm optimistic too about how the stories end, but I think there is so much unknown--as beck pointed out, so much damage that could happen to these young people, even if it's not physical.
