I love that even though they were celebrating the Declaration of Independence, they also showed another side of the story instead of just celebrating. Awesome.
This post made me feel emotional, as it should. Even if I would've maybe turned away too, uncomfortable in the moment.

I was also very impressed that they wove in another perspective--the way it was done was very effective. Yes, it allowed many to turn away because of their discomfort, but I think the way in which public space was altered was extremely effective.

An inevitable word when I teach Latin is 'servus.' While English derives 'servant' from it, the most accurate translation is 'slave.' Nonetheless, I almost always have students who cannot insist on using 'servant,' no matter how much we talk about Roman culture and how slavery was an integral part of it. It's not an easy aspect of human nature to face.

The discomfort is difficult to deal with, but I think we make great progress when we actually deal with it, instead of turning away or sweeping it under the rug...
