This, my fellow readers, is called a kettlebell. For any of you who are looking to jump start your exercise routine, or need something a little different to keep you motivated, look no further than this piece of equipment.
Don't be fooled by it's seemingly unassuming appearance. Kettlebells not only provide you with an amazing, total-body weight training and toning workout, it also gives you a calorie-blasting cardio workout too. Don't believe me? Check out this article from Perform Better about the wonders this piece of equipment can do. This article also explains the history of the kettlebell, and what it can do for you and your health. And for some really impressive footage, check out this video from a kettlebell certification workshop. (Keep in mind, some of those kettlebells weigh 100+ pounds!)
As always, do not try this without the supervision of a qualified trainer that has an RKC (Russian Kettlebell Certification) or an equivalent. Done right, kettlebells will improve your core strength, improve your posture, make you stronger, aid in weight loss...the health benefits are endless. You can, however, get hurt if you do not know how to use them.
For those of you in the Boston area, Punch Gym is a fabulous place to get started with knowledgeable, certified trainers. The video on their website is a snippet of a typical class and I can tell you from experience, it's HARD...but fun!
