How many of you love sweet, fatty foods? Oh, who am I kidding. Everyone loves foods that are bad for them.
Although junk food is bad for our health, conventional wisdom has taught us we can control how much we eat by using a little thing called will-power. Sure, it's ok to indulge every once in a while, but you should be able to stop eating it when you know you've had enough. Right?
Actually, you may be wrong. A new study has found that foods like bacon (yum), desserts (double yum), and other fatty meals are capable of causing an addiction similar to the addictions drugs like cocaine cause.
In a group of rats, the ones who were fed only junk food not only became obese, but their brains changed too. They ate compulsively, and even continued to do so even after eating was associated with pain.
When the researchers applied an electric shock to the rat's feet in the presence of food, the junk-food addicted rats continued to eat, seemingly oblivious to the pain and remained solely focused on the food.
This is some scary stuff.
I, for one, love junk food, but have always found a way to control eating it. I also exercise and generally eat healthy so I don't feel like I have a problem.
What do you think? Do you really think junk food can be as addictive as drugs? Or do you think this is merely another excuse for people to continue gorging themselves on junk food, blaming their unhealthy habits on their "addiction", and not taking responsibility for their own health?
