Is divorce contagious? According to some experts, yes.
In essence, experts that did this research compared marriages and relationships to a body's immune system. If that immune system is healthy, and taking steps to stay healthy, then it can withstand any virus (read: a friend's unhealthy relationship or divorce) that comes along.
However, if that immune system doesn't take care of itself and begins to get rundown, it has the potential to catch a "virus".
So basically, if you are in an honestly happy marriage, and not just going through the motions of what a happy marriage should be, you won't be affected if a close friend or family member gets divorced.
But, if your marriage isn't as happy and sound as it appears, another couple's divorce can potentially serve as a wake up call to your own unhappiness.
ABC news interviewed a man who, after 30 years of a seemingly happy marriage, found himself getting a divorce from his wife after their adult daughter did the same. According to the man, his wife witnessed their daughter's divorce and her subsequent happiness afterward, and realized she wanted the same.
