Wow! Halloween crept up pretty quickly this year, and I still don't have a costume. Growing up, my mom always made our costumes out of old "dress-up" clothes which consisted of my parents' threads from the '60s, '70s, and '80s.
Since my mom made some pretty darn good costumes, I can't bring myself to go to a cheesy Halloween store and buy an adult costume for $50. It just seems like a waste of money for something you are going to wear for one night. Plus, everything on the shelves is a "naughty nurse," or a "sexy witch." When did Halloween become and excuse for girls to dress provocative? Oh, that's right...in college.
I've always been the girl at Halloween parties with a face full of paint, and the only skin showing were my bloody forearms. Needless to say, I got some strange looks from the girls wearing the short Harry Potter skirts.
Let's see, I remember when I was Mister F from The Letter People! The 1970's version of course. The feet were my favorite part, obviously. Or a gypsy was another great costume; layers and layers of skirts and jewelery! I went as a decked-out creepy clown one year while my mom was the spookiest blue-haired witch on the block! It didn't hurt that my mom could use a sewing machine like a mad woman either!
Homemade doesn't have to be hard! And our Halloween costume finder is great for finding a quick idea for you little ghoul. It even includes materials and instructions to make the darn thing. If you don't have something, substitute! It's just Halloween, your kid could go as a pile of dirty clothes and still be creepy!
A little creativity can go a long way! I have my mom to thank for that one. I will probably be making my costume on Halloween...that pile of dirty clothes costume isn't sounding too bad just about now.
