Top Ten, Er, 150 List

There are a lot of food books out there. Traditional cookbooks, diet missives, food lifestyle guides and more flood the shelves of bookstores and libraries.

So it is rare that I find a food book that piques my interest enough to thoroughly peruse it, and even rarer that I get excited enough about the book that I want to recommend it. And yet, a book my Mother-in-Law shared with me did just that; in fact, it got me so excited I found myself sharing random facts about the antioxidants in horseradish to others. It takes a lot to get me talking about horseradish. [more]

In the Fall Garden

I love the autumn, I really do. In the hot summer months, I crave to have the windows open without oppressive heat and humidity sneaking into our house. When the weather cools and we can open our windows again, I am a happy camper.

(Side note: despite autumn arriving last week, our weather is just now starting to turn fall-like. I just don’t like having the A/C running when the calendar says late September.) [more]

Redemption in Snacks

As life gets busy and busier, I find us doing more eating-on-the-run, especially as I tote R and G around to and from school, activities and other fun times.

If we can't eat a healthy *meal* on the run, sometimes I can sneak in an extra vegetable or fruit through snack time. These easy, easy pita chips are a surefire way to get R and G to eat extra hummus. Every time I make homemade pita chips, the boys get all sorts of excited and gobble up an extra dose of whatever I am serving up with them. [more]

Go Figure

Go figure--R won't eat PB&J, grilled cheese and rarely touches mac n' cheese, but he loves blue cheese, oysters and olives.

While he eats his fair share of typical kid foods and snacks, trying to figure out what to pack for lunches away from home can present a challenge, as typical sandwiches don't fly for R. [more]

For the Love of the Tomatillo

Before I met my good friend Jenn, I had never heard of a tomatillo.

Haven't been introduced yet? A tomatillo looks like a small green tomato, covered in a thin husk. But when you cut into a tomatillo, it reveals:

Tuesday's Tip, Part Two

As I was making our gunk-less tacos last week, I was getting ready to assemble the taco shells when I had a thought: how can I keep the bottom of each taco from getting sogging and falling apart? [more]

Doing it Together

You may or may not have realized it, but a holiday week began yesterday. No, not the official start of Autumn (that's tomorrow). Any other guesses? It isn't a holiday that would be listed on a traditional calendar, either, so this might be a tall order.

Yesterday began National Eat Together Week, a week dedicated to encouraging families to take time to share a meal once a day together...eating all at once...at a table...without any distractions. [more]

Braised Red Cabbage

My father-in-law's family is from Germany, so perhaps that accounts for my not being surprised when Sweet Pea Husband (SPH) said to me the other day, "you know what I would love to have sometime soon? Braised Red Cabbage." Since we still have one last red cabbage from our last CSA delivery, I'll be whipping this up for our dinner tonight. [more]

Gunk-less Tacos

One of the key reasons I love to cook things from scratch is that you avoid all sorts of Unidentified Food Ingredients or as I call them "UFIs" or "gunk." Haven't you ever wondered what all those unpronounceable food items are on some ingredient lists? Me too. And since I am not a food scientist, I just have a blanket policy that if it is unpronounceable, listed just as an acronym or has a number (ie, food dye), it doesn't go in our grocery cart. [more]

Roast your own

I love roasted red peppers. I love them because they are sweet, very healthy, and an easy way to add flavor, color and zing to otherwise not so zing-y things. But now that I am a mom, I also love roasted red peppers because they are so stinkin’ easy to hide in things my kids will eat. Things like pastas, pizzas, tacos and lasagna all get a flavor and health boost from roasted peppers. [more]
