Christmas Morning Breakfast

Tonight I will be mixing one more Christmas creation before we settle our brains for a long winter nap:  Egg Casserole.

This dish is a perennial favorite in the Sweet Pea home not only because it is so darn easy to make, but also because it's delicious.

Our version of Egg Casserole has been lightened to help start the day on the right note (the rest of the day is pretty much a sugar-fest, but we’ll get back to the healthy routine next week).

Holiday Food Traditions

As creative as my extended family is, we seldom vary the food we eat for holidays. Oh, sure -- we alter the peripheral parts of the holiday meals, but the core traditions stick. I venture to guess you have some food traditions, too. [more]

My kind of Gingerbread House

I have always marveled at bakers and artists who can take mere flour, sugar, butter, eggs and various other sundry items and transform them into architectural treasures.

My marvel of Gingerbread Houses is rooted in the fact that, deep down, I lack the gumption to even attempt such a structure. While I await the day when my baking bravado pushes me to create a three-dimensional home, this year I decided instead to create a Gingerbread Waffle House. [more]

Cookie Simplicity

Although I love being in the kitchen, shortly after I became a mother, I resigned myself to being an underachiever with my Christmas Cookies. I love baking -- love it. But a few years ago, amidst all the activity of the holidays swirling around me, I decided that December is not the time to go over-the-top with my baking.

I came to this conclusion by reasoning that R and G need a peaceful, relaxed, happy mom during the holidays, rather than one who was trying to run around the kitchen like a Tasmanian devil, creating confections to wow her family and friends.  [more]

One last helping of kitchen gifts

So here we are at the last weekend of holiday shopping. If you are still looking for more “gifts from the kitchen” ideas, here is a wrap-up of some other gift-giving ideas:

Pancake Mix:  We made this last year and it was a hit. It even began a special pancake-making tradition for R and his Pop. This recipe from allrecipes.com is a good one. [more]

Deconstructed Cheddar Soup

Is there anything like a bowl of warm soup on a cold (nearly) winter's day?  I love the simplicity of having a hearty meal in one bowl, perfected by some crusty bread to dip in it.

Cheddar Broccoli Soup is a favorite of mine, but usually it's richness comes from lots of extra, not-so-healthy ingredients and calories.

This soup recipe is full of vegetables, much lighter than a typical cheese soup and serves as a terrific base for adding all sorts of good things. [more]

Chocolate Traditions

I realize it's ironic that yesterday I was carrying on about too much candy and yet, today here is a post on…drumroll please…making candy!  In your own home!  So it is readily available! [more]

Still Celebrating Halloween?

So here we are on the precipice of Christmas and I feel as though Halloween has not fully ended. Why? First, some background…

When my boys went trick-or-treating six weeks or so ago, SPH (Sweet Pea Husband) and I were appalled at how much candy we had allowed R and G to amass. Halloween is a big deal in our neighborhood; people go all out with their decorations--and also, apparently, with their candy.  [more]

Dinner Delight

Besides our mainstay homemade pizza, which appears on our weekly menu probably two or three times a month, nothing gets R more excited than when I say we are having “breakfast for dinner.” The kid practically beams anytime he hears those words…

Ever since R was a toddler, he has loved eggs. When he eats them, he apparently grows a hollow leg, because I cannot for the life of me figure out where else they would be going. He could eat any grown man under the table with his love of eggs.   [more]

Gifts from the Kitchen, 2.0

After yesterday's post, are you not convinced that canning can be simple and easy?  Then this "canning" gift is right up your alley. [more]
