New data from the American Academy of Pediatrics has found that hospitalizations for children under 12 who suffer from eating disorders has skyrocketed 119 percent since 1999.
119 percent. How unbelieveably sad.
Any eating disorder is tragic, but it breaks my heart to think so much emphasis is put on image and a certain "look" that pre-pubescent girls are now starving themselves to fit the "ideal".

Welcome back from what I hope was a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving.
Were you one of the thousands of people who traveled this Thanksgiving?
I personally have never had to travel far to see my family over the holidays. (And by far, I mean no more than a few hours in the car-- never have I had to travel by airplane.)
But to those of you who did travel by airplane-- how was it? With the new body-scanners in place and rumors of supposed protests involving those, I'm curious to know if any of you encountered delays or problems when trying to catch your flight.

It always seems like no matter how much sleep I get the night before, I'm always...ALWAYS...in desperate need of a nap come mid-afternoon.
Does that ever happen to you?
I suppose it's a combination of several things-- I usually workout during my lunch break and while exercise has an awakening effect for most people, it has always had a tendency to make me sleepy. Top it off with the fact that I usually eat lunch after I get back from the gym, and I've got the prime ingredients for a mid-afternoon slump-fest.

A while back I had started every Monday with a health tip, whether it be a new exercise move, nutrition tip, health quote, or anything else that I thought might make healthy living a little easier for all you readers.
I haven't posted a health tip in a while, but I thought, with the holidays approaching and everyone's schedules getting busier and busier by the day, it might be a good time to bring Monday's health tip back.
So here we are. And you'll probably find today's health tip relates to this time of year because it has to do with your diet.

Every day when I get to the gym (well, maybe not every day...sometimes life gets in the way), I see the rows and rows of ellipticals, bikes, and treadmills filled up with people dutifully pounding out their recommended 30-60 minutes of cardio.
This would be wonderful if the main reason why everyone was there was for heart health or stress-relief.
But I know this is not true. I can guarantee almost every single person pounding away on each machine is there for one main reason-- fat loss.

Here's a new study that's bound to create some controversy: light drinking during pregnancy does the baby no harm in the long run, and is, in fact, ok to do.
Published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Heath on October 5, the study found that children of mothers who consumed one to two units of alcohol a week suffered no ill side-effects by the age of 5. They did not have behavioral difficulties, and were not behind on intellectual development.

It's safe to say I have a new obsession. I'm not usually one to really "get into" television shows, but my roommates have gotten me hooked on Dancing with the Stars.
I tried to fight it, but I can honestly say I look forward to Monday and Tuesday nights now.
Aside from the professional dancing (which never fails to make me wish I took up dancing at a young age and stuck with it), it is really neat to see how much each "star" improves week to week. Do you remember Nicole Scherzinger from last season? Her skills rivaled the pros!

OK, here's a serious question for you-- have you started your Christmas shopping yet?
If you are anything like me, the thought of Christmas hasn't even entered your mind yet.
Last I checked, it's September. In my opinion, it's still practically summer. I haven't put away my sun dresses, I'm still wearing flip flops, and I know, deep down, we still have a few 80+ days left before the real cold weather comes our way.
So, imagine my surprise when I saw on Facebook that several of my friends have already started shopping for Christmas.

I was the first child in my family to go away to school. I chose a school about 3 hours away from my home-- an eternity at the time, especially since I didn't have a car, but still close enough where I could come home if I absolutely had to.
Obviously, the first weeks/semester were an adjustment. I was learning to live on my own, with a roommate whom I barely knew (but luckily ended up being good friends with), and taking courses that were harder than I was used to. (After all, it was college!)
