The boobie breakdown

I'm not at the age to have regular mammogram screenings, and according to U.S. Preventive Services Task Force I get another 10 years till I need to start.

The Task Force recently announced that women in their 40s don't need to have routine mammograms for early detection of breast cancer, but should talk with their doctors before deciding.

And now it's time for the controversy:

But mammograms save lives, why delay them? Everyone and their mom, including the Task Force, know this. They just don't think it needs to be routine. They are trying to eliminate women who experience false positives, anxiety, and unnecessary biopsies. I can understand this, my mother has had "lumps" detected off and on throughout her 50s. It can cause a lot of stress when given false news of deadly disease.

Another issue is many think insurance coverage of mammograms could be dropped based on the new recommendations. I don't think we need to worry about this. We can cross that bridge when we get there.

I know women of all ages who have survived breast cancer including my sister's friend of 32 and my 89-year-old grandmother. I am lucky to know people who have beat breast cancer and not the other way around.

My view on the new recommendation is...do what you gotta do. If you want to have regular screenings, more power to you! If not, that's fine too. It's all a matter of personal preference and talking with your doctor.

Halloween costume hoopla

Wow! Halloween crept up pretty quickly this year, and I still don't have a costume. Growing up, my mom always made our costumes out of old "dress-up" clothes which consisted of my parents' threads from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. [more]

Plastic makes perfect

Plastic surgery has always been a controversial issue. Sure you could have had a deviated septum, but most go under to improve their physical appearance. But have we gone too far as to create a beauty pageant just for women who have had plastic surgery? [more]

Water bottle, what? What?

Just about everywhere you turn now you can spot someone with a Sigg™ aluminum water bottle. Not only are these convenient and reusable, but they help eliminate the waste of plastic water bottles. Another benefit was that they were supposed to be BPA free. Well, guess what, they aren't! Can I get a RECALL?! [more]

Labor Day is Monday, September 7th. So congratulations to everyone who has survived layoffs and job cuts in this recession, time to celebrate. For all you slackers, get to work! Just kidding. Labor Day is bitter sweet for me. It's a bummer since it marks the end of summer, but autumn is my favorite season and we get a long weekend! Hooray for long weekends!

How do you plan celebrating Labor Day? [more]

The Internet for kids

"Sex," "porn" and "YouTube" are among the top ten terms searched by kids, according to a recent report by the computer security company. Kids are curious; we have to applaud them on their thirst for knowledge! But how 'bout we keep the sex-ed lectures in the classroom or from their parents, and not from some raunchy video. As a parent, it is your responsibility how safely your child uses the internet. [more]

Barefoot running

Lets talk about FiveFinger shoes, the shoe that has toes. When I first saw these shoes on a middle-aged woman on the train, I was like, "OMG, WTF!" I thought this was the next fashion faux pas since Crocs! Then, today I saw a guy running outside with them on. And then I read Lindsay's blog from Monday and it all came together. [more]

Styrofoam in your home

The other day I was doing some spring cleaning in my teeny, tiny apartment and found boxes taking up extra space in my already too-small closet. And of course, inside of the boxes was nothing but Styrofoam. So, of course, I pitched it reluctantly since Styrofoam isn't biodegradable. But really, what can you do with Styrofoam? Well, by-golly...I'll tell ya! [more]
