A retro trip to FairylandWe took the kid to a not-so-far-away place in Oakland, California called Fairyland. Built before Disneyland, Fairyland (in theory) is a genius concept where classic Fairy Tales come to life with rides, puppet shows, live animals and all kinds of other attractions (including, of course, merchandise and expensive, not very good food). Before we went, a friend of ours told us, “It’s a little rough around the edges.” It was the perfect description, but in a good way. [more]

Want more math in school? Really? At the risk of alienating my math-teacher mom and math-Ph.D. brother, I don’t hesitate to say that I don’t care all that much about math (in general). I did well enough in my math courses, but numbers were never really something that spoke to me the way words do (or, back in the day, the way sports did). And, as I think about K-Man’s future, I don’t usually think about his math aptitude. Apparently, I’m in the minority, however, as the Associated Press has released results from a poll that suggests a majority of parents want more math for their kids. Really? [more]

Nothing real about this showI’m the first to admit that I watch too much TV. After long days of work and nights of parenting, I find it easy to melt in front of the boob tube and unwind. I’m not suggesting this is a good thing, by the way. If we were to homeschool K-Man, there’s a good chance he’d be more likely to recite the Survivor winners than the presidents, and he’d probably know the ramble of a Top Chef contestant before he'd know the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. K-Man & his PapaYesterday was the public memorial service for my father-in-law. More than 300 people turned out to pay their respects and remember a wonderful, brilliant and complex man. G spoke about her dad, as did a number of other family members and friends. As she talked about her memories with Felix, K-Man and I hung out in the back of the synagogue and listened (well, I listened, K talked to G quietly: “Hi, Mommy!”). When she finished, I started thinking about the special relationship that K-Man had with his Papa, and how we now have to protect their bond and the memories. [more]

Growing like a weedThere are the more obvious signs – like frequent trips to the store to buy new clothes – that our kids grow like weeds. K-Man, for example, sorta skipped his 3-T phase and jumped straight into 4-T. (By the way, the whole kids' clothing thing is such a scam. The prices for a square of fabric put any gas prices to shame. And, I just don’t really ever get the sizes. T? What the hell is a T? But I digress). While the clothes may ultimately make the man, the actions make the boy. Nothing highlights K-Man’s growth like his ability to do things that he couldn’t previously do. [more]

Is it really selfish?Friday summer nights are special. There’s a local outdoor area that hosts an amazing concert series. Families come out en masse and either grab a patio table at one of the various restaurants, or bring a picnic. Kids run in circles, play in the fountain and dance like crazy to the killer tunes (each rockin’ song bringing another hour of blissful, uninterrupted sleep!). Tonight is gonna be another great night, and K-Man is hooking up with three (count ‘em, three!) of his favorite girlfriends (saving his all-time favorite for a one-on-one playdate Saturday night). Getting a grip on what really mattersYou don’t have to be a sports fan to know that Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open earlier this week in dramatic fashion. Battling knee and leg injuries that will require surgery, the world’s greatest golfer overcame unimaginable pain to win one of golf’s Major Championships. It’s truly a phenomenal achievement. But, he won a golf tournament. The way the media is covering his win, you’d think Tiger had done something truly important – like curing disease. [more]

And then my body quitMy business partner and I gave the biggest presentation of our professional careers yesterday. We started our company in January and here we were – sitting in a room with the entire marketing team of a Fortune 500 insurance company. We were making our case for why we should be trusted with their advertising and brand marketing budget. Yes, on the heels of my father-in-law passing away (and God knows what other stresses), we had to find a way to be creative and persuasive. Not too much pressure, but if we win this account, we’re taken care of for a few years, probably, if not longer. [more] June 16, 2008
I can't believe what I sawAs my business partner (with twin three-year-old girls) and I sat in our seats waiting for our plane to taxi, a man with his daughter fast asleep on his shoulder, his wife and two other kids walked calmly down the aisle. Although we were scheduled to take off any minute, the wife (along with the flight attendants) choreographed the most amazing dance of changing seats I’ve ever seen. More amazing, however, was the patience with which she did it. [more]

Father's DayMy third Father’s Day is in the books (well, almost). I’m always a little unsure as to exactly what to do on Father’s Day. The question always comes: “What do you want to do?” And, I never know. My inclination is to want a day off. Completely. Just do absolutely nothing. No diaper changes. No responsibility. Sit on the couch, watch sports and be totally excused from any sort of chores for the day. But, then…it never really works out that way. And, I probably don’t want it that way. [more]
