Tuesday's Tip: Write it down

I am always on the lookout for kitchen and cooking tips to share.  When I read about a tip or trick to help make a kitchen run more smoothly, first I give it a try.  If it doesn’t quite register with our family I move on and try something new.  But my favorite kitchen tricks and tips are the ones that family and friends share with me.

This latest tip was not something someone deliberately shared with me, but rather, I heard about it while our entire family was at some friends' home for dinner recently.  Our friends were treating us to an amazing dinner of seafood pasta and Italian appetizers when the husband and wife were looking for a box of broth.  You know the type--the quart size box that reads on top “use within 7-10 days of opening.”

I have not always been the best at using the full quart of broth within 7-10 days.  In fact, sometimes I am not even sure when I opened the broth...and I don’t always trust the "sniff" test to measure broth freshness.  Enter this new and simple and "duh, why didn’t I think of that?" tip:

To ensure you know when you opened a box of broth, or any other item, simply record the date on the box with a pen or marker:

This idea is so simple and yet one I had not ever considered.  Thanks J for the great tip!

With the date written on my broth, I’ll be sure to know when I need to finish using it...as long as I don’t lose it in my refrigerator!
