We drink a lot of iced tea during the warmer months. And while I love a nice glass of unsweetened tea, adding a simple syrup can sweeten the tea beautifully. Simple syrup is just that: *simple* to make. You can even whip some up in your microwave, all you need to do is add 2 parts water to 1 part sugar, and heat to near boiling, stirring well until the sugar is dissolved.
Once you get the hang of making simple syrup, the sky is the limit as to how you can add flavor. We’ve frequently used herbs such as mint, lavender, basil and lemon balm to make flavorful herbed simple syrup. But recently I had an idea that created ginger simple syrup.
I was using fresh ginger for a recipe and had leftover ginger peel:
I happened to be about to make some simple syrup, so I threw the ginger peel in with the sugar and water:
I then let the ginger peel steep in the syrup for several hours and strained the syrup:
The result? A tasty ginger-flavored syrup ready for sweetening my iced tea. I also happened to have some club soda on hand, and once combined with the ginger syrup, I had created the tastiest ginger ale.
A sweet idea!
