Yesterday I shared a handful of ideas for gifts you can make out of items you may have on hand in your kitchen. Today I share a new idea, making a homemade dip mix or herb mix.
I have an aunt who made each of the cousins in our family “Tuscan,” “Indian” and “Asian” herb mixes a couple years ago. These came in so handy in our kitchen for those nights when we needed a quick flavor enhancer! So this year, for R and G’s Papa, we made “Papa’s Secret Barbecue Rub.” Using chili powder, cumin, brown sugar, paprika, salt, cayenne, and a few other ingredients, we created a rub that is perfect for all the grilling Papa loves to do!
Here’s another idea, Mexican Fiesta Dip, a dip that can be made with mayonnaise, sour cream, or greek yogurt. It is a great thing to have on hand for a last minute appetizer you can whip up quickly!
Mexican Fiesta Dip
2 tablespoons dried parsley
3 tablespoons dried minced onion
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon dried ground cumin
1 tablespoon salt (can reduce if sodium intake is an issue)
1 teaspoon ground pepper
Using a baggie, or even better, a disposable icing bag (can be purchased at craft stores, or even some large Target, Walmart or similar stores near the cake decorating items), layer each herb, one at a time.
Seal tightly, to prevent shifting of the herbs in the bag, and place a card on it that reads:
“To make one cup of dip, combine ½ sour cream with ½ cup of mayonnaise or greek yogurt. Add 1-2 tablespoons of the fiesta dip mix, making sure to stir the mix before adding it to the sour cream mixture.”
Voila! A festive, bright and beautiful way to give a small gift to someone who already has everything!
Life is sweet,
