Dippers

I truly appreciate the efforts of fast food restaurants to offer healthier choices, especially the fruit options.  But truth be told, I get frustrated that often times the fruit choice is accompanied by some sort of dip that really qualifies this “healthy side” to be more of a dessert.  If children are given fruit with a sugary dip each time, their little taste buds are trained to expect super-sugary sweet fruit and they aren’t able to develop a love of fruit for fruit’s sake.

G loves to dip things, with fresh vegetables and ranch dip being one of his favorites.  But recently he asked if he could create his own fruit dip.  Once he told me his idea, I happily obliged.  I sliced a peach and reached in the spice counter and made a little platter for G:

We filled the middle with plain cinnamon!

And he dipped and dipped until he was done.

Here’s the great thing:  the sweetness and natural sugars from the peach mixed beautifully with the cinnamon to create quite a tasty snack for G.  Add to this that cinnamon has bountiful antioxidants and I was thrilled for G to be dipping his fruit in this dip!

Life is sweet,
SPC
