My mom came to visit last week and with her she brought not one, not two, but 6 boxes of old school papers, books, toys and dolls. This is a common scenario amongst my generation--parents coming to visit with boxes of old stuff in tow, a passing of the torch if you will.
After paring down the 6 boxes to one that I plan to further sort this week, I came across this book that I filled out when I was beginning the 3rd grade and 8 years old:
My entries were somewhat hilarious, somewhat memory-producing, and somewhat incriminating, but all were typical 3rd grade thinking. My favorite page? Check out what I wrote:
In case the font is too small, I filled in the blank as such:
“I know I will never like Beats! (sic) no matter how old I am!”
You could have cut the irony with a fork, since about the same time I was roasting in the oven:
Can’t tell what is wrapped in the foil? Let me then unwrap it for you:
Beats!, er beets!! (Yes, they look different--they are a heirloom kind from our CSA)
Yes, if 8 year old me could talk to me now, I know she would be incredulous that multiple times in the last week I’ve enjoyed:
My favorite easy beet dish--roasted beets, with feta, balsamic vinegar and a sprinkle of herbs. I love roasted beets, beet salad, even beet soup.
I share this as an encouragement to all you parents out there...no matter how much your child turns up his or her nose at vegetables now, there is hope!
A former picky eater,
