What Do Your Grandkids Call You?

My family never had any quirky names for our grandparents. Grandma, Grandpa, Nanny, and Granddad were about as creative as we got.

That's not to say I haven't heard many (and some funny/different versions) over the years. Nana and Papa are popular ones. Mimi and Pepere are getting up there, too.

I had one friend who called her grandfather Bompie. I think that was probably the furthest any of my friends strayed form the traditional grandparent names.

Celebrities, on the other hand, are different. (No surprise there-- when do celebrities ever do anything according to the status quo?)

Apparently traditional names are too much for this forever-young (at heart) breed. For instance, Goldie Hawn most certainly is not content with being called Grandma by daughter Kate Hudson's son, Ryder. So, instead she goes by Glam-ma.

Blythe Danner (also known as Gwenyth Paltrow's mom) wanted her grandkids, Apple and Moses Martin (Paltrow's kids with hubby Chris Martin) to call her...ready for this?..."Woof."

You got it-- Woof. Apparently this nickname was to pay homage to her "hotness" as a grandmother.

Seriously?

(In case you're wondering, her grandkids actually call her Lalo. Not quite the name she was gunning for, but better than Grandma, I suppose.)

As for Martha Stewart? She simply goes by her first name. Her grandkids call her Martha.

How personal.

Female celebrities aren't the only guilty ones. Lionel Richie goes by G-Pa. (Rumor has it, his daughter Nicole thought "Grandpa" sounded too old.)

But, at least there is one celebrity who isn't caught up in the What-Will-the-Grandkids-Call-Me-that-Won't-Make-Me-Sound-Old hoopla.

And believe it or not, it's Joan Rivers.

Sharp-tongued, sassy, controversial Joan Rivers goes by the most normal name of all-- Grammy.

Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

What do your grandkids call you? (Or, what do your kids call their grandparents?) Did you pick out the names, or just go by whatever the kids chose? Do you think being called "Grandma" or "Grandpa" makes you sound old, or do you not really care about the title?

Tell us your thoughts!
