Shifting from summer-fun mode into the back-to-school mindset is getting trickier than ever, with the added complication of kids' screen-time addiction in the mix. So before it's time for your kiddos to lay down their bicycles, jump ropes, and iPads and hit the books, check out our 8 quick tips for curbing your family's screen time.

Experts say parents need screen-time limits just as much as kids. Tracking and reducing your tech time together as a group helps show kids you're serious about finding a healthy balance and being the authority on kids' technology use and online safety

Here are a few of our favorite quick tips for slashing screen time:

  • Build an hour of screen-free playtime in your child's after-school routine, and only use the Web during homework time when it's absolutely necessary.
  • Stow all family members' devices in a basket during family dinners so you can focus on catching up.
  • Put phones away during car travel -- another great time to check in with your kids about their day (and an important time to focus on the road).
  • Collect all family devices an hour before bedtime to help everyone unwind, get a good night's sleep (and get their gadgets recharged in Mom and Dad's room overnight).
  • Have a weekly "screen-free" day where the family enjoys some old-fashioned fun together.
