L.'s fantastic developmental pediatrician is back from maternity leave, thank goodness. I realized, on our way to our appointment on Tuesday, just how much I've missed her.

Just how much I need her.

She hand-picked a good replacement for us while she was out, but it just wasn't the same. Once you find a good doctor--and a good doctor who gets your child, and understands him, both on a clinical and personal level, a doctor who gets you, too, as a parent, you come to count on them in a myriad of different ways. L. likes her, too, and is always looking forward to meeting with her, and showing off his latest interest and/or gadget. She's been privvy to, in his words, "his darkest secrets," and we share a special confidence, the three of us, in that small room where we meet.

Anyway, we talked a little about middle schools. We are both in agreement on the perfect school for L., and on the fact that we can't find it, or make it a reality. Months ago, whe we were working through some issues at L.'s elementary school, she asked if private school was an option.

"Only if you're offering to pay for it," I said, jokingly.

"I wish I could," she sighed, and I think she really meant it.

It was the start of Chinese New Year yesterday, Feburary 3rd. We'll do our traditional Chinese New Year feast this weekend. This year is the Year of the Rabbit, a good year, by all counts. I had to smile wryly at this description of the new year:

"A placid year, very much welcomed and needed after the ferocious year of the Tiger. We should go off to some quiet spot to lick our wounds and get some rest after all the battles of the previous year."

Sounds good to me. Let's hope this New Year will bring lots of peace and tranquility, as we transition L. into The Middle School Years.

My new nephew, who I just can't wait to meet, will be born this spring under this lucky sign. A child born in the Year of The Rabbit is connected to one of the most fortunate and beautiful signs, the moon--a symbol of longevity and peace.

I'm going to channel all my positive energy into this next year, to make it a good and peaceful year for all us--my family, your families, and for the world at large.

Happy Weekend!
