I definitely cycle in and out of phases of worry, but you are right - it is easier to handle as an adult. I had all sorts of fear as a child and intense separation anxiety as an elementary aged student. The good news is that we mostly grow out of these phases, I hope that will be true for L this summer. Any chance a change of topic (starting a new study?) would help ease his anxieties?

I suspect he'll ease out of the topic on his own--I hope. I think it's fairly normal for kids his age to "try on" thinking about these big, scary topics--it's a thrill ride of sorts. But his level of intensity when it comes to focusing on something can be really something, so a little distraction and diversion onto another topic could be good.
