The kids and I spent a rainy day at the Omaha zoo on Friday. It was the best day and we did just what you described here, we took the time to do some reading and sat for extended times to watch some of the more interesting exhibits. Watching the clownfish with the anemone and then having a really good conversation about symbiosis. Discussing the venom of a scorpian. Watching ants tunneling and building their homes. I could feel their brains working hard, trying to process all of the information. Our zoo does a ton with conservation and is actually making a lot of changes to make habitats more realistic. They are putting animals together as they would be in the wild (except for no predators/prey) so we can watch them interact in their environments. It was such a great day spent.

Oh, it sounds like a wonderful day! While I love the NC zoo, I think they could do a better job modeling and teaching about conservation. It's not a lingering-friendly sort of place either--most of the exhibits are far apart and you have to do A LOT of walking.
