Friday exhale

Is it just me, or has this been a long week? Back-to-school is hard, and it's hard on everyone. There were times this summer when I felt restless--the seamless days, the lack of structure, the hot afternoons sometimes felt like too much. But now we've been swept into a whirwind existence that is decidedly anti-summer: days that are too measured, too structured, way too hectic.

Each day there are lunches to pack, backpacks to fill, snack containers to fill (and at the end of the day, lunches to unpack, containers to wash, backpacks to unpack), school forms to sign, agendas to sign, homework to supervise and, now that L. is in middle school, we have to add checking the classroom Blackboard sites each afternoon--oh, and the classroom Twitter feeds, too--I can't forget about those. I love that there are all these ways to stay on top of my children's school worlds, but I'm already on the edge of information overload and they're only completing their first week of school today.

It's time to exhale, and regroup. We are a tightly oiled machine around here these days, and it will be so welcome to skip town for the long weekend and escape the somewhat relentless rhythms of the week.

I hope back-to-school has gone smoothly for all of you, and that this long weekend brings each of you the chance to come together after a long week, the chance to find some breathing room, to exhale a long sigh of happy relief.

Happy weekend!
