What is balance?

G forwarded me an email from Bravo! TV yesterday. Bravo! is apparently looking for dads (of all types) for a new reality series. The email reads:

Do you live a good life? Are you the "ultimate dad" and /or husband? Do you still make time for the guys? New documentary/reality series will feature a group of friends as they deal with balancing work, family and fatherhood!

Needless to say, my immediate reaction was “Pick me! Pick me!” But, upon further review, I’m not really sure I qualify. Let me pick apart these questions one by one: [more]

The Mom Sandwich

G has gone back to work full-time at a hip, high-powered San Francisco advertising agency. She’s working with young, focused, creative and career-minded people who are truly living the dream. They work hard. They play harder. And, they get lots of free stuff. [more]

Disneyland Dad

“Disneyland Dad” doesn’t necessarily come with positive connotations. Instead, the “Disneyland Dad” is that dad who always treats his kids to fun times. Many times, or perhaps most times, the DD is the divorced dad who sees his kids on weekends. While mom gets all the mundane tasks of day-to-day care, when DD gets the kids, it’s adventure after adventure, staying up late and eating junk. No homework in sight. [more]

Forty years and counting

So, I’m a few days into this 40 thing now. It’s not so bad. If I can just fill every day like I have the last three – this “life after 40” thing is gonna be a breeze. Would it be so hard to hang out with a group of friends while drinking all day, followed by nightly feasts of amazing food (junk and otherwise), while participating in a series of competitions (bowling, pool, foosball and so on)? I mean, that’s a life, right? [more]

One. More. Day.

This is either the last or second to last post that I will write as a 30-something. I actually think that’s kind of cool. As I’ve written a number of times (here, there and everywhere) – age is a number. It’s more about what society has deemed appropriate (or inappropriate) than anything else. “Act your age!” Well, sorry, but I’m not sure what that means. [more]

Ah, modern conveniences

Okay, before I venture forth and risk incurring the wrath of the millions of people who don’t have a dishwasher – let me apologize right here and right now. I’m sorry for this post. I’m sorry if it appears selfish and inconsiderate to rejoice in appliances. I fall on the sword and admit that I’m lucky to be able to afford modern conveniences. Heaven forbid that I give any indication that working a zillion hours a week could possibly result in something that could be perceived as materialistic. I get it. But, right now – I don’t really care. [more]

29 vs. 480 Months

K-Man ate dinner last night at the table. No booster seat. Just hanging out with his plate, fork, sippy cup and eating like the rest of us. Holy crap. When did that happen? I know it doesn’t seem like it’s that big of a deal, but what? He’s just sitting at tables now? Just eating like a human? Huh? He’s not quite two-and-a-half. I kinda like having a toddler. Don’t go growing up into an actual boy. The time…it does go quickly. I’m afraid if I blink, I’ll open my eyes and find him using one hand to hold up his pants and the other to send text messages. Give the dream a chance

Another confession: I’m a bit of a TV whore. The writers’ strike took away some of my obsession with the idiot box, but I do truly enjoy parking my (substantial?) arse on the couch and watching me sum teevee! [more]

Believe me. I'm working.

I left the fabulous spring conditions of the Bay Area for where I sit now – awaiting snow in Omaha, Nebraska. It’s my first trip to Nebraska, and while I haven’t really seen any of it, I can say without a doubt, that people in the Midwest are unbelievably nice. [more]

Make new friends, but keep the old

I always wondered, which is silver and which is gold? I don’t really like gold. So maybe one should be platinum. That would have more personal impact. But then I’m still left to ponder which is which. Certainly, platinum is worth more than silver. Some of my new friends are clearly worth more than my older friends. It’s all so confusing. [more]
