Happy Birthday to Me!

My birthday is Friday. I will be thirty-three years old. I am not as depressed as I was when turning thirty.

I shy away from birthday surprises.
I squirm if somebody sings the birthday song.
I don't like birthday parties. The birthday parties I remember weren't mine. [more]

Anyone Game?

Months ago, a good friend from my old neighborhood, emailed me about The Grocery Game. This friend happens to be a smart and sassy shopper, so when she started to explain that this website was a way she was saving tons on her grocery bill, I listened intently.

The Grocery Game promotes its services as a way for busy shoppers (read: women) to arm themselves with the power of "Teri's List," a list of all the advertised and unadvertised shopping specials for a particular store, in combination with your local coupons, to maximize your savings. [more]

Traffic Jam

Tonight was clear. The headlights from the cars driving south on the expressway looked brighter than usual. I wondered how often headlights need to be changed. The taillights of the cars ahead of me flickered red as we waited in heavy traffic.

I drive-and-think a lot. I thought about other routes that would get me home. What if I turn left here? I tried to envision the way. But I wasn't sure where that might lead me, so I stayed in the lane that was backed up for about a mile. A bit later, I thought about bearing right. But turning right would lead me back to where I had just been. [more]

My daughter invited three young girls from the church in South Africa to our hotel. The resort where we stayed had plenty of fun activities for them. They swam, they bowled, they played miniature golf. [more]

Lucky me

We visited the place of rest, a place where I would in no way lay my head.

The place of rest is one of many informal settlements in South Africa. The settlements look like hundreds of makeshift clubhouses. They look like my seven-year-old gathered cardboard boxes and tin and made a place to play. But there are thousands of Africans who live in the settlements. [more]

Too...

We’re driving cars fast and furious, rushing for the train to get to work on time.

We are feeding our children pop tarts for breakfast; cereal eaten in a stick.

We are noisy, horns beeping, road rage rearing its ugly face.

We are driving though a drive-thru to get a flu shot.

We are just busy, too busy to stop and see the homeless man sitting in a corner in the train station. We run past him.

Too restless to know we need rest. Too busy to notice our business; too busy letting the small things go unseen. [more]

People of integrity

What makes you a person of integrity? Do you have to be a person who is honest and truthful? The nearer I am to a person, the more that person’s integrity is revealed. Are you a person of integrity when you promise a child you'll buy them a candy bar and you don’t? Are you a person of integrity when you take a sick day from work and you’re not sick?

Or does it have to be severe to compromise one’s integrity? Do I have to commit a great sin, like being sexually intimate with a man who isn’t my husband? [more]
