Multicultural Books

My Granny Went To Market by Stella Blackstone is an amazing book. It's a counting book, a trip around the world and a view into different cultures as well. Granny buys a magic carpet and goes from place to place, buying souvenirs that number from 1-10. The text isn't lengthy and the illustrations are bright and busy that even really young toddlers will love it. [more]

Halloween Game

Teaching counting, number recognition and one to one correspondence doesn't happen overnight. Why not find ways to accomplish these skills in a frugal and fun Halloween themed way?!

1. Gather your materials. You will need a file folder some paper ( I am using business cards they are the perfect size!), a marker, some contact paper and 2 exactly the same sheets of stickers. You can also use a plastic bag to hold the 2nd set of cards.

2. Lay out the paper inside your file folder. [more]

Simple Spider

I am challenging myself to create super simple Halloween crafts. Not only are these crafts easy and fast to make, but they use few materials, so they are frugal too!

This spider was a cinch!

1. Gather your materials. You will need a paper plate, a black crayon, a red crayon, scissors and a glue stick.

2. Color the plate with the black crayon, leaving some white for the eyes. [more]

Pom Pom Painting

This is a deceptively simple project. It may seem like all your child is doing is painting with a pom pom but really they are exploring touch, pressure and giving their fine motor skills a work out holding the pom pom to paint.

1. Gather your materials. You will need some paint, a dish, some pom poms and paper.

Toothbrush Painting

Painting week!

This week we are devoting every post to painting with novel things instead of paintbrushes to foster creativity and keep things simple and fun!

Painting with a toothbrush is fun and very goofy for kids, because they know painting is not what they are usually used for. What I like about a toothbrush is that you can use it conventionally for little ones, and older children can dust the paint on for a really cool effect. [more]

Painting Week Kick Off!

Kids' creativity is amazing, and what better way to foster that than to use unusual and fun tools to paint with? We have done similar projects before, but the reason I keep coming back to it, and am devoting a whole week to it, is that:

1. Kids love it
2. They don't get bored of similar projects the way we adults may, and
3. They are fun and easy.

Easy Shape Collage

Easy activities like this are perfect for beginners. The sticky back foam limits mess (and parents' frustration levels) and offers immediate results for impatient toddlers. Using sparkly foam is a great way to dress it up easily. You can focus on one shape like we did or do a variety. I know it doesn't look fancy but trust me my son loved it, and has been pointing diamonds out all morning since we made it last night! Kids don't need super fancy crafts to have fun. [more]
