Closed Eye Bite

I seem to recall from elementary school some little riddle that went like this, “Open your mouth, and close your eyes, and you will get a big surprise!” I am pretty sure what followed usually was not a good type of surprise, but that little saying came to mind when we were challenging R and G to try something with noticeable onions in it.

My sweet R used eat anything, I mean anything, we put in front of him. But recently he has hit that somewhat inevitable stage of kiddie eating where he starts to pick at his food and ask "what's this?!" [more]

Tuesday's Tip

Sometimes the simplest change in preparation can make a big difference in taste. I’ll give you a “for instance” from my own cooking journey: When I was learning to cook, I sometimes didn’t give as much attention to detail in the size of how to cut, slice and dice components of a recipe. I recall a certain chicken and vegetable stir-fry I was preparing in which I hastily cut up the chicken in larger-than-usual stir-fry pieces. It completely altered the beauty of a stir-fry. [more]

Plan B Calzones

I love my slow cooker. Who wouldn’t love a kitchen tool that says to you, “You just throw some things into me in the morning, and go about your day. I will take care of the cooking and make sure your dinner is ready come dinnertime.” [more]

A Big Last

Parenthood is full of firsts...first smiles, first teeth, first steps, first, first, first. But somewhere along the way, you begin to count the "lasts" too.

We've been doing a lot of lasts here in the Sweet Pea Family, but one big milestone last for G is that he is done with diapers. Yes, my sweet G decided it was time to use his last diaper, as he is officially, in his words, "not a baby, a big boy!" This is a very welcome "last" indeed. [more]

New Week, New Trick

Back in January I shared one of my strategies for encouraging the boys to try foods that are sitting on their plates. The "Oh Wow!" bite bit still works wonders...usually.

R has inherited his dad's critical reasoning and skills of deduction, which he is starting to use at the dinner table. He will begin to rationalize why he doesn't want to eat a certain food.

For instance:

R: Mom, you see, I like tomatoes when they are in a pizza or pasta sauce, but when they aren't cooked, I can't eat them. [more]

Cleanup Time

Yesterday we were doing our occasional cleanup of the dining room table. Since we are a busy, young family, we eat most of our meals at the kitchen table, reserving our dining room for special occasions. When it’s been a while since our last special occasion, our dining room table trends toward looking more like a play table than anything used for eating. [more]

PB and 'K?

I went grocery shopping yesterday, and I noticed that there was a big sign by the peanut butter aisle. Basically, the sign was a pledge from the grocery store that they had removed all contaminated peanut butter products from their shelves--the ones that had been recalled due to the salmonella outbreak. New Beginnings

When I was pregnant with my first son, I read just about anything and everything people recommended to me about pregnancy and preparing for life with a newborn. But one anecdotal story particularly piqued my interest. Someone (and for the life of me, I cannot remember who…I blame the subsequent sleep loss and constant state of distraction that stem from parenting) told me that she had heard of a study of pregnant women and carrots.
