Sandwich loveIf you ever find yourself on the island of Lefkada, in Greece, and you happen to be wandering around the center of town on a sun-soaked afternoon--maybe on your way back from the beach, or on your way to dip your feet into the crystal blue water, you might stumble upon a particular sandwich shop. It doesn't look like too much from the outside (or inside, really).

Labor Day activitiesLabor Day is Monday, September 7th. So congratulations to everyone who has survived layoffs and job cuts in this recession, time to celebrate. For all you slackers, get to work! Just kidding. Labor Day is bitter sweet for me. It's a bummer since it marks the end of summer, but autumn is my favorite season and we get a long weekend! Hooray for long weekends!
How do you plan celebrating Labor Day?

The summer movies you didn't seeSummertime is when Hollywood releases its biggest, flashiest films, and this summer has been no exception. Loud, noisy, and often dumb movies like Transformers 2, Star Trek, and G.I. Joe have raked in hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. But some smaller films are deserving of your time and attention, too. Don't let these movies pass you by: [more]

Hooked!I was getting T. ready for bed the other night when she asked suddenly if I knew what an hypothesis was. "Tell me," I said. She paused for a minute, to recall the information, and said, "it's an idea you can test!" [more] August 14, 2009
Summer's last hurrahRemember our neighbors and the bounty that sometimes comes our way? We got home yesterday and found this little pile on T.'s chair on the front porch. [more]

True-ly GoodA few weeks ago I shared some tips for keeping your kids hydrated during the summer. In our family, the boys are more than willing to down a juice box or sugar-y drink wherever, whenever. But getting regular ole' water in them can sometimes be a challenge. One idea that we've used fairly successfully with our boys is the use of "fancy-ing up" their water. A slice of lemon, lime, orange or even cucumber can sometimes make water a little more novel, but we don't always have fresh slices at our fingertips. [more] July 31, 2009
It's in the starsT. is a girl who loves her bedtime. She's never been a night owl (unless you count those dreadful colic days, or the months post-op when she decided it was neat to be awake from 3-6 a.m.). Even if she has the chance to stay up to do something fun, she starts to wilt after 7:30 and asks for bed, and jammies, and sleep. As a result, she's had little interest in the world at night. I'm not sure she's ever really seen a starry night sky--at least not to gaze at in wide-eyed wonder. [more] July 24, 2009
Have bubbles, will travel (even if by armchair)It was only fitting that yesterday we came home from a morning of end-of-summer-like activities (meet-the-teacher event for L., and a work meeting for me) to find a package awaiting us. A dear family friend has a yearly tradition of sending us a "Christmas in July" package. This year we unwrapped the mysterious brown parcel to find this:

Bread, life, loveQuite a few years ago, when I was in high school and my sister and I were in Greece for the summer, we took a train to visit an aunt-by-marriage and her son (our cousin) in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece. When I think about the many stand-out moments in my life so far (and there are, fortunately, many) I always think about that particular trip and about the time we dug out hollows in the sand on the beach, wedged our sleeping bags into the cool spots and spent the night under the stars. Watermelon GranitaWatermelons are big. Yes, I am the master of the obvious. Unless you are feeding a crowd, if you buy a watermelon, for let's say, the watermelon salsa I posted yesterday, you will probably have some leftover watermelon. Need a super easy, almost effortless way to transform your extra watermelon into a yummy, frozen, fat free snack? Take the extra watermelon and press it through a sieve to extract the watermelon "juice:" [more]
