Horse racing mania. Who'd have thought?Wow! Not in a million years would I consider myself a fan of horse racing, but Saturday's race had me on the edge of my seat. Not because it was a photo finish (Rachel Alexandra won by 3/4 of a length...not a lot, but definitely not the closest finish the Preakness has ever seen.) I was more intrigued by the story behind the two favorites, Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird. [more]

Directionally challengedI’m terrible with directions, and I can’t read maps. I tend to navigate by landmarks, and my sense of direction can be completely thrown by something as simple as rain, or fog, or descending dusk. One time, when I was in college, I got so lost trying to come home that I exited desperately off the highway, found myself I-don’t-know-where, and called my dad for help. Priceless parenting experiencesWhen K-Man entered his first pre-pre-preschool program (it’s never too early to start practicing for the SATs), I was amazed by two things: The size of the check we needed to write each month, and the number of emails we received (daily?) asking us not only for more money, but also to help out with the neverending after (or before or during) school activities. As if it weren’t enough that most of the parents had full-time jobs on top of their full-time parenting responsibilities, now we had to be teachers and teachers’ aides, as well? [more]
